Turkish Cinema Featured at the Toronto Film Festival

31 August, 2010 (04:52) | Films

What a joy and not a complete surprise that the Toronto Film Festival would feature Turkish films at the TIFF festival season this year, 2010.

Over the last couple of years I have been lucky to attend the Toronto Film Festival and watch some of the movies which come from Turkey. This year, it is no surprise that the Toronto Film Festival would spotlight the city of Istanbul, Turkey, in its program “City to City.” This year, 2010, after all, is the year that Istanbul celebrates its cultural heritage and production, being nominated the European Capital of Culture for 2010.

The following Turkish films are set for the Toronto Film Festival City to City program. For those movie buffs who love the Turkish cinema, it is going to be a veritable feast.

  • 10 to 11, Pelin Esmer
  • 40, Emre Sahin
  • Ascents in February, Yoel Meranda
  • Block-C, Zeki Demirkubuz
  • Dark Cloud, Theron Patterson
  • Distant, Nuri Bilge Ceylan
  • Hair, Tayfun Perselimoglu
  • The Majority, Seren Yüce
  • My Only Sunshine, Reha Erdem
  • Not Be Or…, Yoel Meranda
  • On Thin Ice, Burcak Kaygun
  • Rauscht, Yoel Meranda
  • Science Lab, Eytan Ipeker
  • September 12, Özlem Sulak
  • Site and Vision: Short and Experimental Film
  • Somersault in a Coffin, Dervis Zaim
  • Straitscaping, Yoel Meranda
  • Waves, Belmin Söylemez

Hopefully, I can get tickets to see some of these great Turkish films at the TIFF festival and will be able to write some movie reviews on them as I have done so in the past. But it looks like it’s going to be a great lineup for Turkish movies this year at the Toronto Film Festival.

And for those of you who want a sample of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s movie, “Distant,” here’s a clip from YouTube. It’ll make you want to travel to Istanbul, even in the winter.
