Mr. Blue Jeans

26 February, 2008 (09:00) | Mr. Blue Jeans

Mr. Blue Jeans owned a shop on the second floor of the Covered Market. Tourists rarely go to the second floor. His little shop sold t-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts and belts. Yusuf and I went there first when my search began for the little boy because Yusuf had to return a pair of jeans he had bought.

Yusuf told Mr. Blue Jeans about my search for the little boy and we showed him the photographs in the brown envelope. Mr. Blue Jeans said he knew the boy and the boy’s father. He said he would help in the search and try to contact the boy’s father.

I would go often to Mr. Blue Jeans’ shop to sit and talk with him in broken English, sipping tea that he brought for me. Eventually, he told me that he had to be careful that I was not some evil foreigner looking for body parts. He said sometimes people kidnap these children for organ harvesting on the black market. But he said he could tell what kind of person I was just by looking into my eyes and that I had kind eyes.

When I had found the little boy, I returned to Mr. Blue Jeans’ shop and he helped Yilmaz choose a black pair of jeans, a sweatshirt and a belt. And after we had finished there, Mr. Blue Jeans took us to his friend who owned a shoe shop to buy shoes for Yilmaz.

I never got a photograph of Mr. Blue Jeans, but being a true businessman, he gave me his business card so I would never forgot him.
