Hagia Sophia Man

While I was waiting in line to enter the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, I saw this very interesting old man. As he stood by the “Exit” sign, (Çıkış) in Turkish, he paused from his dreary task of sweeping the grounds of the Hagia Sophia with a broomstick made of twigs; he seemed to be contemplating something very important.
Perhaps he was dreaming of a glorious escape, looking towards the exit for any sign of freedom. Perhaps he looked towards his future or remembered things past.
I have this photograph in my apartment with the exit sign pointing towards the door. I think it’s my most “existential” photograph.
